Education students from Ball State University have a wonderful opportunity to be partnered with East Washington Academy (EWA) students to serve as mentors and tutors for students in grades K-5 with a focus on language arts and mathematics.
The BSU students will meet with 1 EWA student once a week to assist with the completion of homework and let them know that someone cares about them and their success. EWA Buddies will serve as a positive influence for the EWA students as they make a weekly connection with them. The academic focus will be language arts and math and the content of the tutoring sessions will be tailored to each student's needs. BSU students will be:
- Reinforcing study habits
- Assisting with homework
- Helping the student with organization
- Providing a positive role model for students
Tutoring times occur after school from 2:40-3:30 pm one day a week (M-TH). The BSU students will commit to tutoring the same day each week.
EWA students from grades K-5 will be nominated by their classroom teacher. The names are submitted to principal, Mr. Jason Rees, who then matches a BSU student with an EWA student.
BSU students who are not currently observing or participating at EWA will submit a national background check (good for one academic year) through the Office of Teacher Education Services and Clinical Practice (OTES), a certificate of completion for the BSU online module about working with minors, and an application form. Mrs. Lynette Varner will facilitate this process.
