Sarah @ Ball State Homecoming Week

I helped set up Ball State's Homecoming food truck festival. This included setting up tables, moving chairs and even assembling the dj stand. It was a great start to homecoming week and we had fun doing it.

    First Saturday

My time with second harvest was great on the first Saturday. I participated with my sorority, Delta Zeta, and we spent our morning working on placing informational stickers on diapers and wipes for families in our community. With the help of the other volunteers we were able to complete all the boxes they placed out for us and exceeded their expectations on what we could get done. It was a great experience!

    Children's Museum of Indianapolis

I volunteered with the children's museum of Indianapolis in their outdoor sports area. My sorority, Delta Zeta, brought a group of us to work with children and their families to help build lasting memories. I personally got to work with children in the baseball, football, and basketball areas. It was great to help out and watch the kids learn about the different sports they enjoy as well as getting to see their interactions with their families.

    Muncie Habitat for Humanity

This past Saturday I volunteered with several of my other sorority sisters to help habitat for humanity demo a house they are working to renovate. We split up into groups of 3-4 per room and began tearing down the walls of the upstairs. We spent the next 5 hours continuing doing that and taking that mess out to the garbage. As that was happening several other ladies worked outside to clean up the trash around the house and rake the leaves in the yard. The people at habitat for humanity made it such a fun experience. I can't wait to see what the house looks like in a few months!

    In-person Independent Program

I volunteered with Delta Zeta Sorority at Inside Out - Fresh Directions Hot Meals for Kids with a handful of my other sorority sisters. Today we prepared and packaged hot meals for over 100 individuals in the Muncie community. The meals consisted of a pulled pork sandwich, mac n cheese, greenbeans, and oranges. It was great getting to help out our community!

    Sarah @ Secrete Families

I volunteered with Secrete Families this past Saturday with Delta Zeta. Secrete Families is our local philanthropy and is something I have been participating in since I was in middle school. During my shift with Secrete Families, we wrapped presents for local families in need who may not have been able to afford a Christmas. I think in total my group alone wrapped 7-8 families worth of gifts. I worked the 11:30-1:30 shift with my group but we ended up staying an extra hour to help finish up all the families and help clean up afterwards. I love volunteering with Secrete Families because it is a great cause and means so much to the families that receive their help. I am looking forward to participating again next year!

October 7th: In-person at Food Bank

On Thursday I was one of the first volunteers to arrive at the facility. We began by packing goods for families which included packaging frozen chicken wings with 2 sauces each and a package of hamburger patties which will later feed 50 families. After that, others began to arrive, and we continued to package different items for families across the county. Many of the orders were getting sent out to local schools. Some other items included frozen chicken breasts and butter. I have loved volunteering here! It is a great environment and cause. I look forward to volunteering here in the future.

October 4th: In-person at Food Bank

This week I did similar activities to that of what I had been doing in prior weeks. When I arrived, we joined a group of volunteers who were also there helping. The responsibilities I had today were to complete a stack of orders for different families and organizations across the county. For the most part each bag consisted of 2-3 sticks of butter and bags of frozen chicken. Since we had a large group of volunteers, we were able to complete this task relatively fast. From there they had us sort through onions and bag them in groups of 4. Unfortunately, a lot of them were moldy. I learned this week that it can be seemingly simple things like butter and chicken that families need the most which we often take for granted.

This week I volunteered at 2nd Harvest again. The roles and responsibilities I had were similar to what I did last time I was there which included packaging and sorting goods. When I first got there, we did an order for 36 families who just needed butter, one finished we sorted onions from the good and the bad and packaged them in groups of 4. To finish the day, I sorted and packaged frozen bakery items examining each item for mold. I learned that a lot of our local grocery stores and markets donut food to 2nd harvest including Meijer, Fresh Thyme, Walmart, and even Target.
